Child support issues are a concern for those living in Illinois and elsewhere, and outstanding payments from three decades ago may come back to haunt people. That was the case for one man who was arrested earlier this month for failing to pay child support over 30 years ago.

A 70-year-old Georgia man was arrested in Wisconsin after initially being pulled over for having a loud car exhaust and driving without tail lights. However, during the traffic stop it was determined that the man had an outstanding warrant for child support.

The warrant was over 36 years old. It appears that a clerical error made the date on the warrant difficult for the trooper to determine that it was valid because typewriters were used when it was first issued. The man was reportedly wanted in Milwaukee County for a warrant dating back to 1975.

The 70-year-old man was held over the weekend in the Fond du Lac County Jail before he was able to post the required $2,000 bond. The man is expected to appear in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on the child support warrant.

Child support issues can be emotional and complex. If someone in Illinois or elsewhere is experiencing financial difficulties and is unable to pay child support, they may wish to speak with someone who is well versed in family law. Someone who needs assistance should be fully aware of the applicable laws to ensure they receive all the rights to which they are entitled. Child support issues can be difficult to deal with, but working with someone who has experience in family law may prove to be highly beneficial.
