When a couple seeks a divorce, many times children can be put at the forefront. Many times Illinois father's automatically assume that their soon to be ex-wife will end up with full custody of the children, and he will just end up paying child support. This mentality is destroying the family relationship right along with the divorce.

This doesn't have to be the case. Many fathers simply succumb to the stereotypical divorced father who lives in the studio apartment and can't see his kids. When men who can provide a stable constructive living situation for their children want custody, they should fight to ensure they have a fair chance at receiving split-custody with the kids' other parent.

In most cases, children can benefit from having time with both parents. By having their father in their life, they gain valuable life lessons that they might not get from just a single parent. If fathers don't think they have the proper parenting skills that their ex-wife has, they can learn. Children can benefit from the sheer love and time spent with their fathers.

Being a father is important in maintaining the children's family relationship with all of their relatives. If both parents work together to raise their children, even after divorce, it can show their children how adults can respect each other.

Fathers who want to be a part of their children's lives might want to consult with an experienced Illinois family law attorney. They can work to ensure that a family relationship is maintained for children of divorce.
